CONDUCTING
"One of the most important elements in teaching, conducting, and performing, all three, is listening."

BASIC CONDUCTING
In the fall of junior year, music education students take the first level of conducting with Dr. Christopher Kiver. This introductory course gives insight into patterns, expressiveness, fermati, and unusual meter. Each conducting session focuses on a different musical element. I enjoyed this class very much, as my musicianship skills improved immensely. Also, the preparation and time management skills learned will be extremely valuable.
Below is a sample of my conducting. This exercise focused on fermati, and I conducted Psalm 42, "Freu dich sehr,"
arranged by J.S. Bach.

At the conclusion of our session, we are required to complete a self-reflection so that we think about what was done well and what still needs improvement. Here is one of mine:

INTERMEDIATE CONDUCTING
In the spring of junior year, music education students take intermediate conducting. For this, I studied instrumental conducting with Dr. O. Richard Bundy. This course elaborates on gesture and timing, as well as style and analysis. Through this course I conducted sections of Chorale and Shaker Dance, Chester Overture for Band, First Suite in E-flat (Chaconne), and Road to the Isles (from Hebrides Suite).
I chose to share the following clip because I made many improvements in this session. It was my best display of dynamics, style, and size of gesture. This is my best showing of musicianship.

PENN STATE HORN ENSEMBLE
Conducting at PMEA
As an honors project, I was given the wonderful experience of selecting, rehearsing, and conducting a piece for the horn ensemble. I chose Vere Languores Nostros, originally a choral work by Tomas Luis de Victoria.
Horn Ensemble was invited to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators conference in Hershey, PA, and I was honored to be able to conduct this at our concert. I will never forget this experience! To the left is a picture of me conducting at the conference!
